I have to say I heard bells a couple of weeks back when Joe Burrow and company completely destroyed the Oklahoma Sooners in the semifinals of the CFB Playoffs. No, I don’t think they were the same kind of bells Jerry Jones heard while interviewing Mike McCarthy for his head coaching position. The bells I heard were more like the rings the old NCR cash registers used to make to remind merchants they had just made some money. I have had several regulars to this site ask me what I intend to do with the 100 unit ticket I own on the LSU Tigers at odds of 40 to 1 (see August 22nd post). My options are: 1) Let the wager ride 2) Sell it on Pro Swap or 3) Devise a sensible and profitable way to hedge the bet. Since I am all about ROI (Return on Investment) when it comes to playing the sports futures option #3 makes the most sense. Therefore I have done the following:

  • Placed a 500 unit wager on Clemson +200 on the money line
  • Placed a 550/500 units wager on Clemson at +6 ½ points

By placing these two wagers I have risked losing part of my profits should LSU win the game in a big way (covering the spread). That is the bad news. The good news is that I have guaranteed myself a profit no matter what happens in the Superdome on Monday night. My investment is now 1,150 units and listed below are my three possible scenarios:

  • LSU wins and covers the spread the ROI is then plus 2,950 units
  •  LSU wins but does not cover the 6 ½ point spread then my original ticket is a winner as is the additional wager on the spread. ROI is then plus 4,000 units
  • LSU loses the game. Both late wagers are winners making the ROI plus 1400 units

Whichever of the three results takes place we then have to subtract the additional 600 units we lost on Georgia, Michigan and Oklahoma (200 units each) to arrive at out 2019-2020 college football profits. No matter what the word PROFIT is the key here. Good luck if you are betting the game or totals on Monday and check back late next week for my hoop’s picks.
