In mid-January while in Las Vegas I saw these odds for this year’s WBC at The Golden Nugget downtown:

Dominican Republic 2/1

USA 5/2

Japan 5/2

Korea 10/1

Venezuela 10/1

Cuba 10/1

Chinese Taipei 12/1

Canada 15/1

Mexico 18/1

Puerto Rico 20/1

Netherlands 35/1

Field (All Others) 15/1

In 2006 I was on a cruise ship in the Pacific and was unable to track The WBC game by game but in 2009 Underdogs went 11-24 and betting the Unders went 19-17. As you know I do not bet favorites so playing games based on the 2009 statistics is out of the question. Therefore if you want to have action while awaiting the start of March Madness I suggest a couple of plays on the futures. Japan the two time defending champion is an automatic toss as is the favorite Dominican Republic. I have to admit thinking about putting 100 units on Venezuela at 10/1 but thought better of it after the defection of Seattle Mariner pitching ace Felix Hernandez. In fact it was the overall uncertainty of the rosters that steered me away from playing anyone when I returned to Vegas this month. If I were forced to bet the 2013 WBC my picks would still be Venezuela at 10/1 and the 2009 runner up (In extra innings) Korea at the very same odds. I will keep you updated on my game to game statistics through the finals in San Francisco on March 19th. If you play good luck and remember the very best teams in baseball win only about 60% of the time.
